Where this blog comes from

This blog is the result of my infinite questions about myself, the task of living, the life choices I and others have made.  All colored and magnified by my happy lifestyle change from yuppie to homesteader.

Chapter One: I grew up (more on that some other time).  I was a young adult in Boulder, Colorado, decorating my days with lattes, micro-brew beers, soccer practice, mountain biking, skiing, backpacking, and all things youthful, hip, suburban, and Colorado.

Chapter Two: My husband and I bought 25 acres in the mountains and woods of Southwest Colorado and started the project of creating a home and a homestead.  We found unimaginable adventure, tribulation, and joy.

This is my new backyard:

These are some of our new neighbors and family:

A young doe elk:

A wild turkey in a tree (I didn’t know they could do that):

A great horned owl:

And horses, horses:

And then chickens and dairy cows:

And long-awaited gardening success:Garden

So here we are, transformed into country people.  I’m living a childhood, Little House in the Big Woods –inspired dream.  And, like all dreams, it’s not how I imagined it would be.  But I love it all.

  1. Hi Kate! Val here. I’ve so enjoyed reading your posts and your (better than you seem to think) photographs. I’m forwarding you blog onto my sister, who at the age of forty-two began her life with horses (she’s 48 now). You stories, at least from a distance, are similar. Great to hear your voice on these pages.

    1. Val! How great to hear from you and thanks for passing on the link. I’d love to hear about/from you sister! I’ve been thinking about you — I’m coming to the end of this experiment with being an attorney and being called strongly back towards teaching. Hope you and your lovely family are all well!
